Why training matters more than ever in the age of artificial intelligence

“why bother with training? Ai can teach us all that.” We hear this more and more often. And it isn’t entirely wrong. Artificial intelligence has become part of everyday working life. It summarises product information in seconds, creates learning plans, answers questions around the clock and comes up with fresh ideas when you’re stuck.

Those who do without ai today fall behind. But those who believe it can replace learning together lose something else.

What ai does better

At formation4you, we use ai ourselves, and gladly. It helps us structure content, adapt training to different markets, keep track of learning progress and take care of repetition. It never gets tired and never forgets anything. For the framework of a training programme, it’s an excellent partner.

What no screen can teach

But a sales conversation, or a one-to-one between a manager and a team member, doesn’t take place on a screen. It happens between people, with uncertainty, emotions, pauses and unexpected questions. That’s exactly what you can’t learn by reading a text, or by getting an ai summary of one.

On top of that, there’s a trend we see in many teams. Communication is becoming ever more digital, shorter and more written. Younger generations in particular have grown up with messages, not conversations. The ability to speak freely, to listen and to engage with the person in front of you can no longer be taken for granted. And yet, day after day, it makes the difference between success and failure.

The moment in the room

An example from one of our training sessions. A group of sales consultants, a new electric vehicle, lots of technical data. The mood is reserved; some look sceptical. Our trainer puts the documents aside, asks the group a simple question and turns the answer into a role play. Ten minutes later, people are laughing, discussing, trying things out. The data hasn’t changed. What has changed is how the participants feel about it.

That’s what training is all about: presence, improvisation and the ability to meet people where they are. People who feel at ease dare to try. And people who dare sell with conviction.

The best of both worlds

So for us, the question isn’t: human or machine? It’s: Who does what best?

Ai builds the framework. It prepares, structures, supports learners between sessions and keeps track of what has already been achieved. People bring it to life: trust, enthusiasm and genuine connection.

That way, we keep up with technology without losing what lies at the heart of learning: the exchange between people.
